World Pyro Olympics

The World Pyro Olympics is an annual competition amongst the most prestigious fireworks companies in the world. The event is the largest and most intense international fireworks competition.

The World Pyro Olympics runs through a period of five consecutive days allowing locals and tourists alike to experience the greatest fireworks display in the world. Two countries fire each day; the last participant fires on the final evening of the event.

The host of the event does not participate in the competition but performs a fireworks display on the last night. Awards, such as the People’s Choice, are given out after the exhibition. The crowning of the World Pyro Olympics Champion ends the event.

[edit] 1st World Pyro Olympics

The 1st World Pyro Olympics took place in The Esplanade at the back of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines from December 26, 2005 to December 30, 2005. Firework materials were placed in the participant's barge floating within Manila Bay. Major firework makers from nine countries participated in the competition: Show FX Australia Pty. Ltd., Glorious Group from the People's Republic of China, Nico Lunig Event from Germany, Hanwha Corp. from Korea, Orion Art Production International in Russia, Pyro Spectacular in South Africa, Flash Art Group in United Arab Emirates, Celtix Fireworks Ltd. in the United Kingdom and America Melrose Pyrotechnics Inc. from the United States. The event host, La Mancha Group of the Philippines displayed a colorful fireworks demonstration at the last day. La Mancha organized the 1st International Fireworks Festival on December 2002 and the World Pyro Olympics Exhibition in March and April of 2004. Australia was awarded as champion in the said competition.

The event will be hosted again by the Philippines on December 26, 2006 and more countries have sent their intent to join in the competition.

There are still no definite details as to when and where the next olympics will be held.
