World Funeral is the full-length album released in 2003 by the Swedish black metal band Marduk (band).
Four years after breakthrough Panzer Division Marduk album was released, World Funeral came to be. Balancing fast tracks with mid-paced tracks, it was a disappointment for those who were expecting another head-to-toe fast album. Many fans suggested the band was going for a more commercial "mainstream" approach while others complimented their attempt to broaden their sound.
The track-list of the album is organized as to create a dynamic change of paces and atmospheres, the tracks following this pattern from track 1 - 11: fast - slow - fast - fast - slow - slow - fast intro / slow - fast - slow - fast - slow, where fast indicates a blast-beated song, and slow a non-blast-beated one.
[edit] Some song-facts
The mid-paced track Castrum Doloris is a heavy version of "Til Grälmakar Löfberg i Sterbhuset vid Danto bommen" by the Swedish poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman. Apparently, the lyrics of Castrum Doloris is an English-version of the original poem by Bellman. Another interesting track is the outro Blackcrowned. Again, it's a heavy metal version of a classical composer. Henry Purcell's "Funeral music of Queen Mary" was boosted with distorted guitars. Some people claim that the band used a pre-recorded track of the music and just added the guitars on the top. This particular song was the main-theme of Stanley Kubrick's motion-picture A Clockwork Orange (based on the novel with same title by Anthony Burgess). In an interview for the Brazilian rock-oriented magazine Roadie Crew, leader and guitar player Morgan said that the outro concludes the idea of the album, as being a funeral song for the world itself.
