World Cup of Road Cycling (women)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1998, the Union Cycliste Internationale inaugurated a World Cup competition for women. This competition consists of a series (the actual number has ranged from 6 to 9 events) of races linked together, not only by a common designation (World Cups), but also by a yearly overall points competition (see below).

Each World Cup race is a one day event, with courses ranging from relatively flat, crit-like courses, to those which have a lot of climbing, as exemplified by the Fleche Wallonne World Cup which ends on the famed Mur de Huy climb with several sections exceeding 15% grades.

Note: in the yearly charts below, the events are listed in "reverse" order, with the most recent event in each year at the top of the table, and the first event in each year at the bottom of the table.

[edit] World Cup Points Chart

There is a World Cup Points competition each year, with each separate World Cup event awarding points to the riders depending on their finish in the given race. At the end of the year, the rider with the most points in all World Cup competitions for that year is the World Cup Overall Points Champion for the year.

For the year 2005, the number of points awarded in each World Cup race is shown in the table below. The final World Cup event awards double points (150 for 1st place, 100 for 2nd place, etc).

1st = 100 pts 2nd = 70 pts 3rd = 40 pts 4th = 30 pts 5th = 25 pts
6th = 20 pts 7th = 15 pts 8th = 10 pts 9th = 9 pts 10th = 8 pts
11th = 7 pts 12th = 6 pts 13th = 5 pts 14th = 4 pts 15th = 3 pts
