World Cup Soccer is a 1991 video game for the Game Boy.
The game includes 13 national teams (in alphabetical order: Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, United States) all trying to win the World Cup. Prior to the start of a match, players must select a team and place players on the field. On the field, a player has: one goalkeeper, two defenders, the captain (controlled by the user) and two forwards.
There are four different type of fields:
- Grass: The field is a perfectly manicured, typical, stadium.
- Stones: If a player runs and falls, it will take a few seconds for the player to recover.
- Sand: A player running on this field will notice a decrease in speed.
- Ice: On this field, sliding can, and will be hazardous.
For scoring goals, there are a variety of tricks: it is possible to score a goal using an impossible to stop bicycle kick. At the end of a won match, a password is displayed. The game is over if one match ends in a draw or in a defeat. If you win the final match the team celebrates and the captain receives the Cup.
This game's NES pendant is called Nintendo World Cup.
