The World Club Challenge is an annual rugby league competition held between the winners of the Australian NRL competition and the Super League (Europe) competition.

[edit] History

The competition began unofficially in 1976 as a match between the Australian and English champions, followed by another unofficial match in 1987. The first official World Club Challenge was held in 1989.

In 1997 an expanded competition was contested by the 22 clubs playing for the Super League (Australia) and Super League (Europe) competitions. This resulted in the only all-Australian World Club Challenge final, which was played in Auckland. 12 ARL clubs were not invited to participate therefore the Winners were unable to consider themselves to be World Club Champions. Newcastle Knights won the ARL competition.

In 2000 the competition was resurrected, and it has been played annually in various venues in the United Kingdom before the commencement of Super League and NRL seasons. Australian commentators often deride the competition, citing the British home ground advantage and wintery conditions as reasons for Australian teams' poor performance.[1] The 2007 event will be contested by 2006 NRL champions the Brisbane Broncos and the winner of the 2006 European Super League competition, St Helens RFC. It will be held in February at a venue to be decided though the media expects to be Goodison Park[2]. The venue for 2007 has unexpectedly been decided to be Reebok Stadium in Bolton, the same place of those two clubs meeting in 2001[3].
