Words of Farewell (Japanese: 「別れの儀式」 - Wakare no Gishiki) is episode 25 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-03-27.
In a flashback, then-Major Hughes promises then-Lt. Colonel Mustang he will work under him and help push him to the top so he can become Führer, and make the country a better place. Back in the present, Lt. Colonel Hughes continues his investigation of Laboratory 5 and the homunculi Edward warned him of.
To protect their friends in the military, Edward and Alphonse say they are going to stop looking for the Philosopher's Stone and travel to Dublith, but that's a lie. Their actual plan is to find the Ishbalan refugees in hope of learning from them a way to create a Philosopher's Stone without such great cost in human lives. Winry notices that Rush Valley, the Mecca of automail research and design, is along their way and insists that Ed and Al take her along for the journey. Meanwhile, Scar is reunited with his master who warns him about revenge and its effects.
Back in Central, Maes Hughes' investigation leads him to the Führer’s secretary, Juliet Douglas. While on the way to ostensibly see Dr. Marcoh, Hughes is discussing Miss Douglas’ questionable background with her when he is threatened by Lust. Miss Douglas is actually another homunculus, named Sloth. Envy, who has disguised himself as Lt. Ross, feigns rescuing Hughes only to shoot him whilst in the guise of Hughes’ wife Gracia as Hughes tries to warn Mustang. Maes Hughes is posthumously promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and is buried with full honors.
