Wong Nai Chung

Wong Nai Chung (黃泥涌) is the local name of Happy Valley on the north side of Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. It is at the east of Wan Chai and west of So Kon Po. It is a valley and therefore it is sometimes referred as Wong Nai Chung Kuk (黃泥涌谷) or Wong Nai Chung Valley. The names of Happy Valley and Wong Nai Chung are usually used interchangeably. The major road, Wong Nai Chung Road, in the area is named after it.

Wong Nai Chung means yellow mud stream in Cantonese language. The name is referred to a river collecting waters from Wong Nai Chung Gap and surroundings. The river nourished the rice paddies before the construction of Happy Valley Racecourse. The river was recoursed to Burlington Canal beside reclamation of Wan Chai. The canal which is presently covered under Canal Road. The canal is known as Ngo Keng Kan (鵝頸澗) locally.
