Wolfen, Germany

Wolfen is a town in the district of Bitterfeld, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated approx. 6 km northwest of Bitterfeld, and 20 km south of Dessau.
During GDR years, Wolfen became home to most people working at the Bitterfeld industrial plants. Since the German reunification, the whole area has suffered from disinvestment, deindustrialization, and depopulation; unemployment became a serious problem. Population decreased about 50% since then.
Wolfen is also the seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("collective municipality") Wolfen, which consists of the following municipalities (population in 2005 between brackets):

- Greppin (2.835)
- Thalheim (1.538)
- Wolfen * (25.271)
