Wolcott (village), New York

Wolcott is a village in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 1,712 at the 2000 census. The name is from a former governor of Connecticut.
The Village of Wolcott is in the southwest part of the Town of Wolcott and is west of Syracuse, New York. Part of the southward spread of the village is in the Town of Butler.

The land where the village is now located was purchaes in 1805 by Jonathan Melvin. The area was settled by people from New England. The village was first incorporated in 1852 and re-incorporated in 1873.
In the years 1874, 1876, 1879, and 1884 the village experienced major destructive fires.
A statue of "Venus arising from the sea" was purchased for $875 in 1913 to mark a public drinking fountain at a natural spring. This statue was one of six and still stands proudly in the center of the village.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.02%) is water.
Wolcott Creek flows northward through the village and empties into Port Bay, an arm of Lake Ontario.
County Roads 89, 155, 160, 163, and 261 converge on the village. New York State Route 104 is immediately south of the village.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,712 people, 715 households, and 421 families residing in the village. The population density was 339.0/km² (878.7/mi²). There were 768 housing units at an average density of 152.1/km² (394.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 94.45% White, 2.57% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.76% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.15% of the population.
There were 715 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 34.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $28,056, and the median income for a family was $36,705. Males had a median income of $31,071 versus $23,417 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,577. About 12.4% of families and 18.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
