WOLD (AM)

WOLD is the set of call letters used to identify an AM radio station and a FM radio station in Marion, Virginia. Both stations are owned by Emerald Sound, Inc.
WOLD-AM began broadcasting on April 25, 1962. The station broadcasts on 1330 kHz. It is licensed to broadcast only during the day. The station broadcast at 1,000 watts until 1981, when it was given authority to broadcast at 5,000 watts during daylight hours. (In the winter it reduce its power to 500 watts from sign-on until sunrise.)
The AM station was originally owned by Seward Broadcasting Co. It was acquired by Emerald Sound in 1965.
Today WOLD-AM broadcasts country music and religious programs.
WOLD-FM went on the air on March 14, 1968. It broadcasts on 102.5 MHz. Its 6,000-watt signal covers Smyth County, Virginia, and much of neighboring Washington County, Virginia.
The FM station broadcasts 24 hours with an adult contemporary format.
Harry Chapin recorded a song called W*O*L*D about a fictional morning DJ. It is uncertain if he was specifically referring to WOLD, but many of his songs deal with subject matter speficially about the Northeastern USA.
