WNCF is an ABC-affiliated television station, broadcasting on UHF channel 32 from Montgomery, Alabama. Its transmitter is located in Hayneville, Alabama. The station is owned by SagamoreHill Broadcasting and is the flagship of that group which is also based in Montgomery.
[edit] History
Channel 32, originally WKAB-TV, had its original broadcast on March 12, 1964. It was the third station in Montgomery, after WSFA and WCOV. (A fourth station, Selma's WAKA-TV, moved into the Montgomery market in the 1980s.) The station has always been an ABC affiliate, though it has gone through several owners (Bahakel Communications and Media General, among others). The callsign has changed twice: to WHOA-TV (for "Heart of Alabama") in 1989, and WNCF (for "Where News Comes First") in 1999. The latest callsign change coincided with a short-lived return to the local news race.
[edit] News
As WKAB, the station had newscasts branded as "WKAB-TV News". After the call letters were changed to WHOA, the newscasts were branded as "NewsWatch 32".
An evening newscast was added in 1994, but was eventually cancelled due to low ratings against the VHF stations (WSFA and WAKA. Ironically, the station's call letters stand for "Where News Come First", and were not changed when the news department was closed.
An abbreivated newscast, titled "Ten @ 10" currently airs at 10:00 p.m. The local newscast runs 10 minutes, and is outsourced to the Independent News Network -- although the program is produced in Iowa, it features reports produced by local reporters and crew.
A morning call-in show, Good Morning Montgomery, continues to air weekdays from 5:30-7:00 am. It has aired for over 15 years, and is a Central Alabama tradition.
