[edit] FM 88 Sports

WMUL's sports department covers more Marshall sporting events live than any other media entity. It broadcasts all of Marshall's home college football games, which is a rare opportunity for college radio stations. It also broadcasts Marshall's home soccer, volleyball, basketball (men's and women's), softball and baseball games. The station broadcasts some away football, baseball and all women's basketball games.

WMUL also produces original sports progamming. The Fall 2006 lineup is as follows:

  • Wednesdays
    • 5:30-7 p.m. "Tri-state High School Football Report"
    • 7-8 p.m. "Sportsview" (Marshall athletics)
    • 8-9 p.m. "The Blitz" (college football, NFL)
  • Fridays

[edit] NewsCenter 88

The news department broadcasts newsbriefs at the top of the hour from 12-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. The flagship broadcast, "The 5 p.m. Edition of NewsCenter 88," runs for 30 minutes and covers all the events happening around Marshall, the Huntington tri-state region, and the rest of the nation. It also includes the five-minute "FM 88 Sports Report" and a minute-long "Metro Huntington Weather Forecast."

[edit] Awards

The staff at WMUL-FM have won 693 national awards since faculty manager Dr. Charles Bailey began tracking the awards totals in 1985. WMUL-FM staff members set a new station record in the 2005-2006 school year with 77 awards.

The record-breaking year was topped off April 22, 2006 at the West Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association's (WVAPBA) 2005 awards ceremony at Pipestem Resort State Park. While most of WMUL-FM's awards are in competition against other college radio stations, the WVAPBA awards are versus all the commercial and non-commercial radio stations in West Virginia.

WMUL-FM took home 7 first place and 7 honorable mention awards from the 2005 WVAPBA.
