From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the continuity of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, fusion refers to the combining of any two characters into one entity, similar to karyogamy. (Fusions are not present in Dragon Ball.) Fusions are generally achieved via one of two means: by performing the fusion dance, or by using the Potara earrings. There are also other types of fusion, such as one employed by the Namekians.

[edit] Fusion dance
The fusion dance is a precise set of poses and movements that allows any two individuals two fuse together.
Both individuals must be roughly the same size and have the same power at the time of the fusion. Any mistakes that may occur during the dance—a wrongly-angled arm, or a closed fist—will cause the outcome of the fusion to be defective, such as being overweight, skinny, or slow, and the fusion's power will be laughable.
Once the fusion dance has been performed and the fusion has taken place, it cannot be reversed for thirty (30) minutes. There is also no way to cancel or revert a failed fusion. The fusion dance also consumes a large amount of energy.
The fusion creates a new entity that shares the characteristics of both the individuals who performed the dance. However, the new entity may exhibit some dominant traits from one of the individuals who performed the dance; this can be visually, personality-wise, or both. The new entity is typically dressed in Metemoru-styled clothing: a small vest-like apparatus with padding around the shoulders and neck.
It is strongly hinted that the Metamoru (a pun on "metamorphosis"; known as "Metamorans" in FUNimation's English dub), who taught Son Goku the technique, put it into practice themselves.
[edit] Movements
- The first movement of the fusion dance requires both individuals to stand three paces from one another, side to side. Their arms are held out so that they point away from each other with their palms open and facing away from their partner.
- The second movement requires both individuals to say the first syllable of the word "fusion" ("fu", which sounds similar to "fyoo") while shuffling their feet sideways toward each other. Exactly three steps must be taken. While moving toward their partner, both individuals must swing their arms up over their heads so they end up pointing at their partner.
- The third movement requires both individuals to say the last syllable of "fusion" ("sion", which sounds similar to "shun") while swinging their arms across their body, turning them so that their palms face downward before closing their fists. While this happens, the outside leg is brought up so that it is at a right angle with the shin facing the other individual with the foot being level with the knee.
- The fourth and final movement of the fusion dance is to shout "ha". Simultaneously, the body is leaned over so that it is slanted toward the other individual. The arms are brought up over their heads with the index fingers extended. The outer leg is then extended as both sets of index fingers come in contact with each other.
Once the index fingers touch, the fusion is initiated and the two individuals become a new entity. However, each individual's moves must exactly mirror the other individual. As mentioned above, one mistake can cause the fusion to have undesired effects.
It is interesting to note that, in Dragon Ball GT, even Goku and Vegeta's tails were perfectly in-synch while the dance was being performed.
[edit] Fusions
- The first fusion seen in Dragon Ball Z resulted in Gotenks, which was the name of the fused form of Son Goten and Trunks. Gotenks eventually transformed into a Super Saiyan, and finally into a Super Saiyan 3.
- The second fusion resulted in Gogeta, which was the name of the fused form of Son Goku and Vegeta. Gogeta was seen as a Super Saiyan in the twelfth Dragon Ball Z movie, The Rebirth of Fusion!! Gokū and Vegeta (FUNimation's dubbed title is Fusion Reborn). In Dragon Ball GT, Gogeta was formed when Goku and Vegeta performed the fusion dance in their Super Saiyan 4 forms, resulting in Gogeta being a Super Saiyan 4.
[edit] Potara earrings
The Potara earrings create a much more powerful and permanent fusion counterpart to the fusion forms created by the fusion dance.
Each individual places a Potara earing on an ear; however, the earrings must be on ears opposite the other, otherwise the fusion will not taken place. Like with the fusion dance, the fusion creates a new entity that shares the characteristics of both the individuals who are wearing the earrings, and also exhibits dominant traits from one of the individuals involved in the fusion. However, unlike the fusion dance, the outward appearance of the new entity combines all the elements and physical features of the individuals to create a new, unique individual.
There are no requirements to fuse using the Potara earings (such as an identical or similar build, and similar power) other than that the earrings must be placed on opposite ears. However, individuals fused in this manner cannot fuse again via a different manner (such as performing the fusion dance with a third individual), though another Potara fusion may take place.
The Potara earring fusion is mainly a property of the Kaiōshin.
[edit] Fusions
- Long before the use of the Potara earrings in Dragon Ball Z, Rou Dai Kaiōshin (known as "Elder Kai" in FUNimation's dub) was accidentally fused with an ugly witch when she stole one of the Potara earrings and put it on. This resulted in Rou Dai Kaiōshin losing his good looks, but he retained the witch's magical powers, which complimented his own powers. This fusion did not have a new name.
- The second known Potara earing fusion resulted in Kibitoshin (known as "Kibitokai" in FUNimation's dub), the name given to the fusion formed by East Kaiōshin (known as "Supreme Kai" in FUNimation's dub) and Kibito, East Kaiōshin's greatest ally. This came about due to East Kaiōshin's curiosity, when he put on one of the Potara earrings and fused with Kibito.
- The third and perhaps most well-known of the Potara earring fusions resulted in, arguably, the strongest character in Dragon Ball Z. Vegetto (known as "Vegito" in FUNimation's dub) resulted from the fusion of Son Goku and Vegeta. Vegetto never ascended beyond Super Saiyan; however, in this form, he was stronger than even Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 form.
[edit] Other fusion techniques
[edit] Yuugou
Yuugou is a technique special to the Namekians and is more of an assimilation than a fusion.
One Namekian absorbs the energy, strength, intelligence, thought pattern, and memories of another Namekian. Both participants must consent willingly to fuse in this manner, the pair usually agrees to the stronger of the two to serve as the host. The host then places his hands over the chest of the other Namekian, and a bright flash of light then causes the two to become fused. The result of this is permanent.
This is employed twice in Dragon Ball Z. In both cases, Piccolo was the host, taking the role of the absorber. In the first case, Piccolo assimilated Nail, the last warrior Namekian, before fighting Freeza (known as "Frieza" in the FUNimation dub). The second case involved Piccolo assimilating Kami before fighting Cell in his imperfect form.
In both instances, Piccolo was then strong enough to hold up against the current villian, and may have possibly been able to defeat the villian.
[edit] Absorption
Absorption, while technically not a fusion technique, involves the "consumption" of an individual by another individual to increase that individual's power, as opposed to sharing the power in a new entity.
Absorption was performed by Cell to attain his "perfect" form, and by Buu to increase his power to defeat the defenders of the Earth.
Cell used his tail to absorb individuals. This required him to expand the tip of his tail into a veritable funnel, allowing him to swallow his victims through the funnel, as opposed to through his mouth. This allowed him to become increasingly more powerful. However, as discovered, the victims he swallows may be removed from within him, and he loses all the power that he had gained when he had absorbed that individual. This is especially true when Jinzō'ningen #18 (known as "Andoid 18" in FUNimation's dub) was expelled from within Cell, and he reverted back to his semi-perfect form.
Buu, by using his own flesh, absorbed his victims. A large chunk of his flesh is flung toward a victim where it completely engulfs the individual before returning to Buu's body. This causes Buu to have an increase in physical or mental prowess, or both. Once inside Buu's body, the victim is "miniaturized" and stored for safe-keeping. After absorbing a victim, Buu takes qualities from their outward appearance, usually the appearance of the strongest individual within him at the time.
A similar technique is employed by Qi Xing Long (known as "Naturon Shenron" in FUNimation's dub) in Dragon Ball GT. When Qi Xing Long is defeated by Son Goku, he tricked Pan and absorbed her. He gained much power, but his cockiness allowed for Son Goku to retrieve Pan and destroy Qi Xing Long.
[edit] Metamorphosis
This technique is performed by Uub and the innocent Buu in order to fight Bebi (known as "Baby" in FUNimation's dub), Super Hell Fighter #17 (known as "Super Android #17" in FUNimation's dub), and Yi Xing Long (known as "Syn Shenron" in FUNimation's dub). The technique involves one individual "molding" himself into the other, making him stronger.
