WLIP

WLIP is a fulltime radio station at AM 1050 kilohertz located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA and serving the Chicago-Milwaukee metropolitan region along the west shore of Lake Michigan with 250 watts effective radiated power both day and night. It is owned and operated by Colorado based NextMedia Group and has been since 2000.

At 8:00 AM on Sunday, May 18, 1947, WLIP signed on the air from the basement of the Kenosha National Bank Building in downtown Kenosha, licensed as a daytime-only station. In 1975, WLIP built and opened its new studios at 8500 Green Bay Road.

In the 1980s, the Federal Communications Commission granted WLIP permission to broadcast on a 24-hour-a-day basis.

Currently, WLIP is an affiliate of the ABC Radio Network; former network affiliations have included the Mutual Broadcasting System, AP, Wisconsin Radio Network and CNN.

Programming today features a mixture of oldies music and talk shows. Previous formats include AC/Oldies (2003-2005), Adult Standards (1996-2003) and Talk/Oldies during the early-mid 90s.

Longtime WLIP programs include The Music of the Stars with Lou Rugani (since 1992, Sunday mornings from 7 to 11), The Lenny Palmer Show (since 1998, weekday mornings 8 to 11), and The Doctor of Design with Kathy Redlin (since 1993, Saturday mornings 9 to 9:30).

Irene Buri-Nelson, of the show Around Town with Irene Buri-Nelson died in a car accident on Friday July 7, 2006. She had worked at the station for 60 years since its beginning in 1947.
