This article refers to the album by Nine Inch Nails. "With Teeth" is also the name of a song by The Melvins on their 1992 album Lysol.
With Teeth (also known as Halo 19, also printed as [With_Teeth]) is an album by Nine Inch Nails released on May 3, 2005. With Teeth is the nineteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and the band's fifth major release. It is preceded by the 1999 double album The Fragile and is to be followed by an as-yet-untitled new album that is due out in 2007.
In a Rolling Stone article, Reznor said about the album: "It's more song-oriented [than 1999's The Fragile.] It's much more lean. It's going to be twelve good punches in the face — no fillers, no instrumentals, just straight to the point."[1] With Teeth, unlike previous NIN albums, is not a concept album. Instead, Reznor says it is just "13 songs that are friends with each other".[2] Regardless, there is an overall theme to the album of fading away and the blurring of reality.
The album was produced by Trent Reznor and longtime NIN producer Alan Moulder, who has also produced albums by The Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, and My Bloody Valentine, and assisted by Atticus Ross, whom trent described as "my right hand man". According to a statement on the official NIN website, Reznor stated that world-famous producer Rick Rubin was Reznor's "mentor" and "source of inspiration" throughout the planning and writing process of this album. Making a guest appearance on drums is former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.
With Teeth was released as a standard CD, double vinyl, a DualDisc and a CD/DVD combo. In addition to 5.1 surround and stereo mixes of the songs, the DualDisc (and DVD) contain the video for "The Hand that Feeds", an interactive discography and a slideshow.
In a statement to his fans on the official website, Reznor explained that due to his dislike for the CD artwork constraints, the artwork, credits, and lyrics have been incorporated into a 20 megabyte 3'×4' poster (released as a free PDF file to those who register with the NIN website). The poster, designed by Trent Reznor and Rob Sheridan contains lyrics that are not featured in the actual songs (a practice Reznor has done since Pretty Hate Machine), as well as song titles and lyrics not featured on the album, possibly recorded but unreleased [3]. Physically, the poster is available to member of The Spiral fan club as part of the welcome package. Some limited runs of the poster were also made by fans, and available online.
The tour for the album began in Fresno, CA on March 23, 2005 and features former A Perfect Circle and Marilyn Manson bassist Jeordie White (formerly known as Twiggy Ramirez), former Icarus Line guitarist Aaron North, keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, and returning drummer Jerome Dillon who was replaced in October 2005 by Alex Carapetis after experiencing heart trouble.[4] He was in turn replaced quickly with Josh Freese. A live DVD of the tour, filmed in HD, will be released as Beside You In Time: Nine Inch Nails Live
The first three singles from With Teeth have gone to #1 on the Modern Rock charts, a first for Nine Inch Nails.
The album's first single, "The Hand that Feeds," began radio play on March 14. A leaked copy of the song was broadcast on radio in February, and a leaked copy of "The Line Begins to Blur" appeared on the Internet soon afterward. On February 27, 2005, "Getting Smaller" leaked onto the Internet, followed by "Right Where It Belongs", and mere days afterwards, the entire album was leaked on filesharing networks 18 days before its official release.
The album's second single "Only," was released on July 25. A video, directed by David Fincher, was shot for it on April 19, 2005 and released on July 12 on the official NIN website.
The third single was the track "Every Day Is Exactly the Same". Unlike the previous two, Reznor announced that there will be no accompanying video for this single. The song has been nominated for a Grammy at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards
The working title for this album was Bleedthrough, referencing the phenomenon of audio bleed-through. Reznor stated that the name was changed because "it was supposed to be about different layers of reality seeping into the next, but I think some people were thinking about blood or a tampon commercial."[5] The album was also previously thought to be called "The Mentality of One",[6] though this proved to be a hoax title.
This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.
This album was also named one of the top 40 albums of 2005 by Spin magazine.
