Wisconsin Public Radio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wisconsin Public Radio is a network of radio stations in the state of Wisconsin devoted to public radio programming.

There are 27 stations in WPR's network, divided into two unique services. The first, the Ideas Network, is devoted almost exclusively to talk radio programming. The second, The NPR News and Classical Network devotes itself primarily to classical music broadcasting, but has access to National Public Radio news, which is broadcast regularly.

WPR's Madison, Wisconsin station WHA 970 AM is the oldest radio station in the United States. It is unusual that WHA was allowed to continue broadcasting during World War I while most stations were shut down.

WPR's stations are licensed to several different organizations. Most stations belong either to the University of Wisconsin System and administered by the University of Wisconsin-Extension, or to the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board, a state government agency. Other stations are affiliates, owned by local schools or colleges. The network's headquarters is located on the U.W. Madison campus, but a substantial amount of programming originates from studios in Milwaukee, and all of the regional studios originate some local programming. Not all U.W.-owned stations are part of the network; some are student-run, and others, like WUWM, are public stations but operated independently.
