Winston, County Durham
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Winston is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles to the west of Darlington.
The village has seen many a change in the past 25 years, including the building of High Garth and High cliffe edge. A local folk myth states that the bypass next to Winston was built due to a tragic accident occurring in the middle of the village, which involved a war generals daughter dying in a car accident. The local Bridge Water Arms Pub at the bottom of the village was once a school.
The local river is also a great attraction, seeing people from miles around going to see it, as well as Rabbit Hill, which unfortunately two years ago saw one man break his back. The bridge also once held claim to being the biggest single stone arch bridge in Europe and has been featured in a French movie.
Winston Gate is another hamlet nearby very close to the border with Richmondshire and North Yorkshire.
