The Windoc (a steamer) launched on April 11, 1959 as Rhine Ore, an ocean bulk-carrier. A sale of the vessel in April of 1977 renamed the ship Steelcliffe Hall. After decades of service and changes to the function and structural conversions of the ship, in 1988 Steelcliff Hall was given the name Windoc (2) after being acquired by N. M. Paterson & Sons Ltd., following the liquidation of the previous owner, Halco.

The vessel's name comes from the city of Winnipeg, where the owner's head offices were based. The fleet suffix doc refers to the Dominion Of Canada.

In 2001, while traveling through the Welland Canal, Windoc collided with Bridge 11 in Allanburg, Ontario. The accident produced a large fire on board, shredding the lift-bridge, and tearing the bridge off the vessel. No serious injuries were reported.

[edit] Trivia

  • After the accident, Windoc was taken to Hamilton harbor for repairs. The following winter, she had broken loose from her moorings during a winter gale, and then drifted across the harbor running aground on the other side.
