Wincing the Night Away (a play on "Twistin' the Night Away"), the fourth album by indie rock group The Shins, will be released on Sub Pop Records on January 23, 2007.

As reported in Rolling Stone magazine, the album title is in reference to James Mercer's "crippling insomnia". The other considered title, "Sleeping Lessons", was also in reference to this.

In an August 2006 interview with Billboard Magazine, Mercer confirmed the name as Wincing the Night Away.[1] In the interview, he stated that the band was "stretching out" on the new album, and that the extended recording period had given them more time to develop their ideas.

The full track listing was announced by Pitchfork on October 16. The first single is "Phantom Limb" and was released to iTunes on November 14, 2006. The single reached physical retailers on November 21, 2006. It can currently be found on the band's MySpace.

The album was leaked from a promo copy on Friday, October 20, 2006. As of yet there has been no response by Sub Pop addressing the leak.
