Willoughby Wooster
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the stories of P. G. Wodehouse, Willoughby Wooster, known to the reader as Uncle Willoughby, is the brother of Bertie Wooster's father.
His sole appearance is in "Jeeves Takes Charge", a short story which first appeared in Carry on Jeeves, where he is in the process of finishing his recollections, entitled Memoirs of a Long Life, which are to be published by Riggs & Ballinger. The volume includes numerous scandalous stories about Willoughby's boyhood friends, many of whom have gone on to fame and fortune. These stories focus in particular on Lord Worplesdon, whose daughter, Lady Florence Craye, is engaged to Bertie for much of the story; she, in fear for her father's reputation, enlists her fiancée's assistance in the destruction of Willoughby's memoirs.
Willoughby resides at Easeby, Shropshire, where he employs a butler named Oakshott; in addition to Lord Worplesdon, he is acquainted with Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle and Sir Stanley Gervais-Gervais.
Willoughby dies after the affair of the memoirs, and it is from him that Bertie inherits his vast fortune that ensures he will never need work again, nor, due to the sheer size of the legacy, will the nine succeeded generations, apparently.
