William Layton Roaf (born April 18, 1970 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas) is a former American football offensive tackle.
[edit] NFL career
Roaf started his career with the New Orleans Saints in 1993 after an outstanding career at Louisiana Tech, where he was a finalist for the Outland Trophy in his senior year for the best offensive lineman in college. He was acquired by the Kansas City Chiefs in a trade in March of 2002 for a conditional draft choice. He has been selected to eleven Pro Bowls since 1994, missing only the 2001 game.
Throughout his career with the Chiefs, Roaf was the heart and soul of one of the most dominant offensive lines in the NFL that includes premier guards Will Shields and Brian Waters. Roaf's run-blocking has paved the way for running backs like Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. Also a dominant pass-blocker, a necessity for any left tackle, his blocking has allowed quarterback Trent Green to pass for at least 3600 yards in each of his seasons with the Chiefs.
[edit] Retirement
On July 28, 2006, Roaf told the Kansas City Star that he was retiring from football. General manager Carl Peterson said he was holding out hope that Roaf would reverse his decision, but Roaf said he was "solid" on retirement. [1]
