There are at least six notable people named William Sutherland:

• A prominent technology research manager in the United States, better known as Bert Sutherland;
• The Australian physicist William Sutherland who independently discovered the Diffusion Equation in 1904;
• Sir William Sutherland (1880-1949), a Scottish politician, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1922;
• The founder of the Canadian Free Press, later London Free Press, Ontario, Canada; and
• Dr William Garner Sutherland, A Doctor of Osteopathy and the first to research cranial osteopathy.
• An Earth Alliance officer in Gundam SEED.
• William Sutherland (Canadian politician) - former city councillor in North York, Ontario
• William Sutherland (soldier) - British Major who fought in the American Revolutionary War
