[edit] Who was William Howard?
Lord William Howard (1563–1640) was the third son to Thomas Duke of Norfolk. He married Elizabeth, the Daughter and co-heiress of William Lord Dacres, from whom the Carlisle branch of the Howard Family is descended.
Lord William Howard is represented in Sir Walter Scott's "Lay of the Last Minstral", as the rough border feudal lord of an earlier day:
"His Bilboa blade, by marchmen felt,
Hung in a broad and studded belt;
Hence, in rude phrase, the borderers still
Called noble Howard Belted Will."
He should in fact be regarded as the first country gentleman of this part of England. He was a scholar and a writer, making an extensive collection of books and manuscripts, and also showed interest in antiquities and Roman altars.
He was strict and stern in putting down border raiders and his influence went a long way towards encouraging these parts to civility.
