William A. Porter

William A. Porter is the founder, former chief executive officer, and current board member of E*TRADE.

He received his B.A. from Adams State College, an M.S. in Physics from Kansas State University, and his Master's degree in Management (M.B.A.) from the Sloan Fellows program at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Bill Porter is also a founder and the first Chairman of ISE. His career is marked by significant innovation, having conceived and developed several new technology based businesses. Mr. Porter is chairman emeritus of E*TRADE, the very first real-time on-line electronic brokerage service, which he established in 1992 and has since led the industry in bringing unmatched efficiencies and cost-savings to the investing public. Beginning in 1980, Mr. Porter conceived and implemented several new financial services, including the first on-line financial management service bureau.

Mr. Porter has held numerous senior management positions, including Chairman of Trelleborg Rubber Company; President of Tretorn Shoes; President of Commercial Electronics Incorporated as well as several senior level positions in the science and technology arena.

Mr. Porter holds 14 patents, having developed a number of electronic devices and processes. These include the first shoulder mounted back pack broadcast color TV camera; the first electronic diesel-electric locomotive check-out system; the first infrared horizon sensor for satellite stabilization and several other breakthroughs still in use today in a variety of fields.
