William & Lydia Bean

The Beans are considered by many to be the first legitimate settlers of Tennessee. They were captured during a Cherokee raid on their settlement, however, Mr. Bean escaped with his life, and Mrs. Bean was spared by Nanye-hi, also known as Nancy Ward. After being saved from certain death, Mrs. Bean went on to befriend Nanye-hi, teaching the young Cherokee woman about such Europeanconventions as weaving and domestic agriculture; once introduced into Cherokee culture at large, these implements revolutionized the Cherokee way of life.
