Wikimedia Commons logo This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. The description on its description page there is shown below.

Josiah Willard Gibbs (11 February 1839 - 28 April 1903), an American physical chemist.

This file was taken from w:en:Image:Willard Gibbs.jpg, which was given by w:en:User:Reddi at the time of 06:43, 29 Aug 2004. The image seems a copy of the widely circulated portrait of the physical chemist.

In the English Wikipedia, the image is described as "19th century photograph. public domain" with the copyright tag {{PD-old}} (the English Wikipedia version), which calls a statement that this image is in the public domain because its copyright has expired in the United States and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 100 years.

User:YebisYa, who uploaded the file to Commons, has not specified who took the photo, and when and where it was published, but believes that it was anyway taken and published somewhere in the USA on or before 1903, and qualifies at least for the copyright tag {{PD-Art}} (Commons version).

Public domain The two-dimensional work of art depicted in this image is in the public domain worldwide due to the date of death of its author (if it is was published outside of the U.S. and the author has been dead for over 70 years), or due to its date of publication (if it was first made public in the U.S. before 1923). Therefore this photographical reproduction is also in the public domain, at least in the United States (see Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.), in Germany, and in many other countries.
