[edit] Why a maid?
Okay, maybe I just don't get this whole "moé" thing, but why is Wikipedia represented as a maid? Wouldn't a librarian or something make more sense? Andrew Levine 15:44, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm thinking of "clean-up" ^_^. But I'm sure there is an extremly logical reason why she's in a maid outfit, the OS-tan all have completly sane reasons why they look like they do. Calicore 17:40, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

- Well, Kasuga creat her as formascot of WikiProject Anime and manga. And maid outfit is ultra-popular costume for Moe character, librarian is not (as far as I known). Think of it, the first OS-Tans, Me-tan also has maid outfit. Then again, the idea of Wikipe-tan in librarian outfit seem to be nice idea but...what kind of costume need for being librarian? Maybe her holding Wikipede doll might be better. L-Zwei 04:10, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

- Wikipe-tan wasn't made for WP:ANIME, and I wouldn't be surprised if she pre-dated the WikiProject. Kasuga simply made us some newer images for use when he found out that we were interested in using her as a mascot. And while I do like the new color images, I gotta say.. old-school Wikipe-tan are my personal favorites. -- Ned Scott 04:22, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- I endorse the above message. _dk 04:36, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

- Man, Kasuga does some nice artwork. Maids ftw! User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:12, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Librarian would be a better costume variant IMHO. She can wear the maid costume in her vandal clean-up duties. OS-Tans can wear different costumes; she should be easily identifiable with her Wiki hair ornaments. Just a thought -- Eqdoktor 07:00, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Her age?
She does look very much like a child. Would we agree that her birthday was on January 15, 2001, the same day Wikipedia launched? --24.255.155.100 00:28, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think 8 January 2006, when Kasuga introduced her to Futaba Channel is more make sense. Unless we're going to give her some fictional background :D .L-Zwei 03:21, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Wouldn't that make her a baby? --Littleghostboo[ talk ] 05:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Just like deity in myth, she born as teen girl, not infant. Though there is image depict her as infant and mature girl as well. L-Zwei 05:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Wikipe-tan "is" Wikipedia as such, and her "birthday" in fiction would then be January 15th 2001. But her real date of invention would be January 8th 2006. --GunnarRene 03:23, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Most fictional characters are ageless, thus she wouldn't grow old when Wikipedia has been around for 50 years, etc. I'm not sure there's much of a point to make an "age" for her.. -- Ned Scott 05:59, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipe-tan featured in a magazine
From Wikipedia:Village pump (news)#Wikipe-tan makes a cameo appearance in UK magazine Games TM
- "Wikipe-tan, the Wikipedia OS-tan has found its way into the latest edition of GamesTM magazine (issue 48). It's found on page 30 beside a regular column on the Japanese Gaming scene by correspondant Tim Rogers. The article is absolutely nothing about Wikipedia, but instead about the maid cafe culture in Japan. - Hahnchen 01:01, 13 September 2006 (UTC)" (see Image:Wikipe-tan GamesTM.jpg)
-
- I guess they just looked around for a free-use anime-style maid image. Flattering all the same, although a citation would have been nice. Shiroi Hane 07:45, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

- On that line of thought, I was wondering, does this mean that the above linked image is under GDFL now? Also, it's very likely that credit was given, just not on the same page (often image and photograph credits and copyright info is given on another page in the magazine, along with info about editors, etc). -- Ned Scott 23:53, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

- Since the image is a scan of a GFDL image being used in a magazine, then yes, it would also be GFDL (since GFDL requires that) since it doesn't really include anything else from the article and is really low-res anyway (looks like someone snapped a picture, rather than scanning the page). That's my interpretation, anyway. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 15:39, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

- I just came across this little note last night from Commons, Commons:Image copyright tags#GNU Licenses:
- "Please note: The GFDL is rather impractical for images and short text, because it requires the full text of the GFDL to be published along with the image. This is prohibitive for print media: in order to use a single image in a newspaper, a full page containing the GFDL would have to be printed. To resolve this, please dual-license your work under GFDL and an equivalent Creative Commons license like CC-by-sa-2.5 (see below). This helps to make your work usable not only freely, but also easily."
- So yeah, it looks like Games TM didn't do all that was required. -- Ned Scott 18:27, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POTD
FYI, Image:Wikipe-tan full length.png is scheduled to be the Wikipedia:Picture of the day on October 2, 2006. howcheng {chat} 00:23, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Wikipe-tan, a moé anthropomorphization of Wikipedia, similar in theme to an OS-tan. In Japanese animation, "moé" characters are those designed to elicit a protective or loving response from the audience. Moé anthropomorphism is a form of anthropomorphism where moé qualities are given to non-human beings, objects, concepts, or phenomena. Like many moé characters, Wikipe-tan is designed to be a cute young girl, and this image shows her in a maid costume. Image credit: Kasuga |

[edit] Deletion?!?!?!
Why on earth would the Wikipe-tan article get deleted? It was a POTD! Will someone please tell me? -Rich

[edit] CVG WikiProject mascot?
Please see this thread. I've proposed using Wikipe-tan as the mascott for the WikiProject Computer and video games. jaco♫plane 04:57, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Kasuga's Japanese site
I found his Japanese site too (it was linked from his devianArt but I never noticed it before...), though it has no Wikipe-tan in it. I'll post it here in case anyone is interested. There are some really interesting things in there XD http://www.geocities.jp/kasuga399/ Enjoy _dk 00:11, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- And I found another. I can conclude that if I were to ask Kasuga to draw a Wikipe-tan for the lolicon page... it wouldn't be as difficult as I previously thought. http://kasuga39.e-city.tv/ (Not for the faint of heart) _dk 05:16, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- If he does do this, lets hope he makes it a different character, so that it would not be "Wikipe-tan". Don't get me wrong, I can be pretty perverted too, but I don't like my peas touching my mash potatoes. I get the same impression from Kasuga since he puts up this stuff on a separate website from his other art. -- Ned Scott 05:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Cool Cat has went and asked Kasuga to draw WikiPorno, and Kasuga replied:
- Hi, Cool Cat. Sorry for my delay. Thank you for your proposal. However, I wouldn't like to contribute pornography-like arts to Wikipedia or other Wikiprojects. I 'm sorry that I am unable to help you. --カスガ 2006年11月24日 (金) 12:55 (UTC)

- On that note, Kasuga once said on his talk page: "Hello 70.105.147.48. It is mere one opinion that Wikipedia's personification is considered to be an innocent girl. If you want that Wikipedia must be a mighty-wise man (like Odin ,Krishna or Dr. Manhattan), of course, you can show concrete sketches of him, and you should. [edit] Filesize optimization
After running the main Wikipe-tan image through PNGOUT, I noticed that the filesizes were much larger than they could be (For instance I got the main image down to 66% of its current size). I was wondering if anyone would object if I systematically replaced the gallery files with optimized ones. Unneeded data is removed, and the remaining data compressed further. The only problem is that their removal may complicate further image-editing efforts. CABAL 13:00, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe only change the ones like the cropped versions, but leave the originals. -- Ned Scott 05:48, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Ran a quick check on the Cropped section. I'll upload newer versions of the following when the Commons account clears: Wikipe-tan face.png and Wikipe-tan head.png. CABAL 14:52, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] game?
There are references to a "retro RPG" and a "visual novel". Are these used as example images, or do these games actually exist?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pierrecurie (talk • contribs) .
- They are only examples, and they don't exist, so they should not be portrayed as such. If you find them used in that way, outside of BJAODN, then please correct it. It's accurate to say that Wikipe-tan is drawn in a typical anime style, that she's a moe character etc. but we shouldn't be creating an impression that she's actually appeared in an anime. Until she does. --GunnarRene 14:39, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, there's no reason someone couldn't make them :) There's already a Wikipedia rougelike (sic) that could be given a graphical frontend, however, the objective is to get kicked out of Wikipedia. -Seventh Holy Scripture 14:46, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
