[edit] Announcement

Shortly after writing music of the Vatican City, I made an announcement about the fact that every independent country in the world has a music article. I would like to declare that Phase 1, and make a list of needed articles and/or stubs from the current status section (say 50 no-articles and 50 stubs) and declare that the completion of reasonably well-done non-stub articles on these subjects will be the end of Phase 2. I had wanted to do a Collaboration of the Week, but I feel that it will be too difficult to do research on subjects which are so often written only in foreign languages; this will provide more choice and opportunities for anyone willing to participate. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to organize the list? (i.e. do we want to specify a number of performers vs genres vs instruments vs other subjects? include internationalizing hip hop, heavy metal or rock and roll more? something else relevant?) [edit] Sample uploading project

If I made a WikiProject Sound samples to encourage the uploading of ogg vorbis music samples, would anyone join me? I think it'd be great if we had samples of as much as possible, but it's rather tedious and time-consuming to do in bulk. If you don't know how, it's easy -- I can walk you through on a Mac and point you in the right direction on a Windows. We could even advertise a week in which we encourage Wikipedians to do just two a day for a week, or maybe just one sample for their five favorite bands/albums/whatever -- with the number of users who probably have copious sound samples, we could really move towards having a comprehensive review of music. Any takers? (I am posting this to several project pages, please respond at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music) Tuf-Kat 22:23, Oct 16, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Music Collaboration of the Week

I would like to announce the introduction of the Music Collaboration of the Week, which aims to coordinate our efforts in improving a music-related article every week. Please come help us decide on the first article to be chosen! Tuf-Kat 04:40, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Missing encyclopedic articles

As a subproject to Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles, Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics now exists with a list of articles taken from music encyclopedias (by Gmaxwell). If anyone is looking for something music-related to write, there's a list of ideas. Some of them just need redirects: there's plenty of low-hanging fruit if you're not up for a full article. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 01:39, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Various Cuban styles of music sub-categories

I have nominated a number of the sub-categories under Category:Cuban styles of music for deletion, based on the fact that they where either empty or contained only one or two articles, and the articles they did contain where about the music style the category was named after and wold better fit the parent category anyway (IMHO).
This is not my area of expertise however, and I noticed the categories where created by an admin who I also think is a member of this project. So I figured I'd alert you guys to the vote. If there are any good reason for those (to me) seemingly pointles categories to exist please state theyr case at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 July 23. --Sherool 01:18, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Improvement drive

Two related topics, Percussion instrument and Rhythm and blues have been nominated to be improved on WP:IDRIVE. Come and support the nomination there or comment on it.--Fenice 07:30, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Active?

Is there any chance this project will become active again? - AKeen 18:33, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

There's always a chance. I'm still interested and still work in this area, and User:Smmurphy recently expressed an interest in it. Tuf-Kat 03:51, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
I'm interested, especially in the realm of South American music - AKeen 23:02, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
ok, so two people is a quorum, right. TUF-KAT is a third, do we really need five, or can we call the project "open" and have some fun with it? Smmurphy
I'd also be interested in this project. I've been working on some of the Zimbabwean music-related pages, becacuse that's what I'm most interested in and know the most about, but I'd be happy to help with other articles as much as I can. Alex Weeks 15:18, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
What sorts of project would everyone be interested. I don't think there's enough people for a CotW. I've made some goals that we could all work towards, if anyone's interested. Other suggestions? Tuf-Kat 17:32, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I agree that a COTW would be untenable. But I do have some suggestions. A lot of the work done in the past has been poorly referenced. One easier project would be to update the reference formats in the FAs, and then in the "Music of *"s. Another, more pressing project is improving the article on world music. Could it be a FA someday? Also, that article should have no redlinks, we could make stubs and articles for those bands.Smmurphy 18:06, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
We could also try to implement something similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chemicals/Assessment. Updating references would be useful, though I suspect it may not work as well as we want (all of us here are into world music, we probably could pretty easily find refs for music of Cuba, music of Ireland, etc, but once we're done tripping over each other in those articles, we'll be stuck scrounging around for sources for music of Belarus and music of Djibouti -- not that that would be an altogether terrible thing, but it might not be the most productive use of our time). Tuf-Kat 05:39, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Child Ballads

More or less in the ambit of this project, Child Ballads is a virtual trove of articles that would be worth writing. We clearly don't need an article for each Robin Hood ballad, but there must be a hundred possible article topics there. -- Jmabel | Talk 07:41, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Native American/First Nations musicians

Hey, I was wondering if anyone would like to help me, I am making pages for some of the most important Native American/First Nations artists I can think of, and I was hoping that someone would look over my articles, as I tend to make healthy sized articles rather than stubs, but they tend to have a lot of typos and spelling mistakes (any mistakes in this note are purely accidental, but they should illustrate my point). If you would be so kind, I'll be adding the artists to List of Native American musicians, so you can check my additions from the history if you would like. Thanks. Smmurphy 04:43, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

I was thinking of mentioning some of these artists on the Music of * pages (for instance Joanne Shenandoah is an institution in Syracuse, NY) but I am not sure how, except by trying to build a new section in each article for Native American/First Nations music. I would appreciate a little bit of help fleshing out these sections, as my knowledge is sparce, and google can only help so much. Thanks. Smmurphy 00:17, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] "world music song stub" move proposal

I'm not sure about the conventions for stub names, but this one might be of interest. In the meantime, go ahead and put stubs on articles for world music songs - Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion#world-music-song-stub->worldmusic-song-stub. Smmurphy(Talk) 00:47, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] template use

Over the next few days, I will do work to streamline the Musicboxes and make the page easier to use. I would like opinion on whether it is pertinent to have both a {{Infobox Music genre}} and a Musicbox at the same time on an article.

Personnally, I believe such combinations to stretch the article unnecessarily, and have been dealing with them in the follwoing way:

Musicboxes belong on:

  • "Music of" articles
  • regional genre scenes
  • non-genre pages

If a page has a {{Infobox Music genre}} and a Musicbox, put the appropriate link or links to "Music of" in the "Other topic" section and delete the Musicbox.

Comments?Circeus 17:34, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

While I'm at it:

  • {{hawaiianmusic}} is up for deletion.
  • Is there any consensus as to which of {{MDmusic}} or {{USstatesmusic}} should be used on individual state pages?

Circeus 19:10, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't think either genreboxes or musicofboxes should go on more than a few pages. Genreboxes should only go on the genre page (e.g. heavy metal music, not subgenres or other related pages) and the musicofboxes should only go on a handful of pages directly related to the place (e.g. Music of France, music of Corsica, French hip hop, Music history of France). Tuf-Kat 18:09, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm slowly switching to Template:MDmusic as I try to clean up the US states music ofs, so Template:USstatesmusic should eventually be deleted, but not until they've all been converted to the new one. Music of Hawaii has already been done, so Template:Hawaiianmusic can now be safely deleted. Tuf-Kat 21:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Music of Eastern Europe, etc.

I've noticed that the article Music of Eastern Europe isn't very good, as it provides a POV definition of Eastern Europe, while asserting what is at best an overgeneralization about "Slavic music tradition" that hardly applies to Moldova, and probably not to the other three countries listed in any meaningful sense (and if true would be better served in an article called, say, Eastern Slavic musical traditions). While the articles about the individual countries are fine, this and other arbitrary subregional divisions are necessarily POV and not terribly useful; most of the others like this (Music of Southeastern Europe) are just as weak, as, indeed, is the stub Music of Europe. I think this is all dealt with better in an article such as Western music.

Before I nominate this for deletion, I thought I'd ask here about other users' opinions. ProhibitOnions 10:18, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

While it's true music of Eastern Europe is in poor shape, nominating it for deletion won't help. For one thing, there's not going to be consensus to delete it -- I can pretty much guarantee that. Besides, people often discuss and write about Eastern European music, and so we should have an article on it. What we have may be pretty terrible, but that's a reason to improve it, not delete it. Tuf-Kat 15:25, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
This is why I posted my concern about the article here; I'd like those who are knowledgeable about music to fix this article (and the others in the "series"). Sure, there's such a thing as Eastern European music. If the article is to be improved, it needs to focus on this rather than its current unverifiable, original research speechifying about ethnic "tradition"; the article cites no examples of music whatsoever. Likewise, its definition of Eastern Europe needs to be changed; the article Eastern Europe accepts there is no strict definition of the region. ProhibitOnions 18:00, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh, well, agreed on all points there. I thought you actually didn't want an article on the topic. Tuf-Kat 21:37, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mohamed Nuur Giriig

I've just discovered and cleaned up Mohamed Nuur Giriig. Can't find anything about him on the Internet though, just sites where you can download his songs. If anyone wants to delve a bit and flesh out his article, that would be great! Angr (tc) 14:35, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] redirect template:WikiProject World music

The default category for template:Worldmusic assessed is the same as the one used by template:WikiProject World music, redirecting the template would make editing the page slightly simpler (no need to change template). Circeus 04:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Looking for expert review

Hi all -- we've got a bunch of lingering music terms over at Wikipedia:Articles_requested_for_more_than_a_year. A number of them appear to be world music-type terms. Anyone want to take a look and either (a) write an article (b) do a redirect if its covered elsewhere or (c) delete the term if it doesn't warrant a full-fledged article? Any and all help would be appreciated! Bookgrrl 23:32, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Shiny Shoe Music

The article Shiny Shoe Music has accurate information but a neologistic title. Discussion on Articles for deletion and on the article's talk page have determined that the article must be moved; that discussion also shows that no one knows where to move it to. One suggection is that the article be merged into Jewish music. I am requesting comment here; but please direct all discussion to the article's talk page. Thanks so much.—msh210 16:51, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Membership list

There are two criteria basically used to determine if a project qualifies for deletion. These are no activity on the project page for 3 months and no listed members. Right now, this project has no listed members, as it has no list. This could potentially prompt someone else to list it for deletion. Please remedy this situation. [edit] Project Directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council is currently in the process of developing a master directory of the existing WikiProjects to replace and update the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. These WikiProjects are of vital importance in helping wikipedia achieve its goal of becoming truly encyclopedic. Please review the following pages:

  • User:Badbilltucker/Culture Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Culture Directory 2,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Philosophy and religion Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Sports Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Geographical Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Geographical Directory/United States, (note: This page will be retitled to more accurately reflect its contents)
  • User:Badbilltucker/History and society directory, and
  • User:Badbilltucker/Science directory

and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope to have the existing directory replaced by the updated and corrected version of the directory above by November 1. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 21:39, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if you tried to update it before, and the corrections were gone. I have now put the new draft in the old directory pages, so the links should work better. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused you. B2T2 00:25, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
