[edit] Not a good design for hockey

I, for one, don't like the design a whole lot. There are lots of details missing from applying a soccer-style summary to a hockey summary. They include:

  • Winning and losing (or tied, as the case may be) goaltenders
  • List of penalties
  • List of linesmen

Also, the summaries here differ (significantly) from those used in other hockey articles, such as 50th NHL All-Star Game.

Among the things that need to be worked on, IMO, is this:

  • Few list hockey scores as "CAN 3-1 USA", it's usually "CAN 3 USA 1"
  • Ugly tables for layout. This is just my personal opinion, but if you are not using tables for tabular markup (ie. you're using it for layout), then you should not use tables at all.

Here's an example of how I would do the CZE-FIN summary:

  • August 30: Czech Republic 0 Finland 4
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Elias (Hooking - Obstruction) 2:03 1st
    • Finland Goal: Hentunen (Kapanen, Numinen) 6:33 1st
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Jagr (Holding) 1:30 2nd
    • Finland Penalty: Jokinen (High Sticking) 9:22 2nd
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Rucinsky (Tripping) 13:27 2nd
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Vyborny (Interference) 18:15 2nd
    • Finland Goal: Koivu (Lehtinen) 0:30 3rd
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Skoula (Holing) 4:09 3rd
    • Finland Goal: Kapanen (Salo, Peltonen) PP 4:54 3rd
    • Finland Goal: Eloranta (Timonen, M. Koivu) 8:51 3rd
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Malik (Hooking) 11:11 3rd
    • Czech Republic Penalty: Elias (Unsportsmanlike Conduct) 16:15 3rd
    • Finland Penalty Jokinen (Interference) 16:15 3rd
Shots on Goal: CZE 5-4-3-12 FIN 13-11-10-34
Power Play: CZE 0-1 FIN 1-6
W - Kiprusoff, L - Vokoun
Players of the Game: CZE - Vokoun FIN - S. Koivu
Referees: Joanette, Koharski
Linesmen: Devorski, Lazarowich

I tampered with using penalties, perhaps they can be added to the Game stats page? Plus, that summary doesn't look a whole lot better in my opinion. Earl Andrew 18:06, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
While I agree that there could be more infomration, i think what we have is pretty good. Of course, I would like something like this for the game stats page the best, but who has the time to do it? One other thing, is I do tend to agree that team -score team -score seems more natural than team score - score team (for what it's worth) Kevin Rector 03:32, Sep 1, 2004 (UTC)
One note about the format I posted: this was (largely) the format that was used for Rendez-vous '87 as well (my sources didn't list what the penalties were...). (Okay, so I did write the game summaries in the articles I mentioned) The summary isn't meant to be aesthetically pleasing, but it does provide most of the necessary information. In any case, a standard ice hockey game summary format should be created. We could even create an ice hockey boxscore template... kelvSYC 06:58, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
If you must, do it on the Match stats page. Personally, I have found the amount of information on the web on this tournament to be lacking. I would love to do something like that on the Nashville Preds site link provided, but where would I find the stats? Earl Andrew 07:03, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Did you check the official WCH website [1]? kelvSYC 00:30, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Yeah, of course I did. I don't like it at all. Earl Andrew 03:19, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
How about CBC's coverage of the World Cup? kelvSYC 14:41, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I checked it to. It's a lot better than the WCH site, but it is still lacking. Maybe I'm just being picky. Earl Andrew 17:18, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
