[edit] What actually is this project?
Could we have a mission statement/brief summary of what this is? Is CHP relevant? It seems very much relevant to reducing total energy use in temperate countries which get chilly in the winter.... Omicron18 10:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ethanol EROI
Is it true that ethanol has a negative (or less than 1) Energy Return On Investment? Tom Haws 21:34, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Depends on the method of production. I've heard figures from 0.5 to 3.5. I believe the best current is cellulosic ethanol. njh 09:26, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

- People don't seem to think very creatively about this. Corn isn't the only way to make ethanol and huge fields cultivated by huge tractors isn't the only way to make corn. Algaculture and/or a creative hydroponics setup that's automated using small electric motors powered by wind, solar or nuclear could be a way of producing ethanol, alcohol fuels or biodiesel without using any fossil fuels. Glippy00 16:54, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
In my opinion it is hard to really know the energy return on the corn production, or any agricultural production, system in a time of rapid fuel price change.
Until recently we we paying 20 a barrell for oil. I believe it is about 60 now. I bet the energy return is climbing very fast. The fossil fuel dependent farmers in my area (Asheville NC) are all complaining about the cost of operating.
The (hypothetical?) farmer who makes ethanol for her tractor with non marketable products then feeds the leftover higher nutrition mash to livestock than anerobically composts the animal waste to make biogas than fertaizes her organic crops with the compost is happy that operating cost are only going up slightly while demand for her products is climbing fast as the price premium for energy smart organic products is decreasing due to increases in the the cost of production of energy intensive conventional products.

perhaps a link to permaculture would have been good as well Susten.biz
I agree with njh: > [It] depends on the method of production. I've heard figures from 0.5 to 3.5. > I believe the best current is cellulosic ethanol. njh 09:26, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
I believe that corn based ethanol could have an EROI less than 1 (non-negative). Once the technology is developed, cellulosic ethanol is obviously better than using grain feedstock, because the energy source is less expensive, more plentiful, and is non-agricultural. Any plant material can be used, so all the arable land can be used to grow food, and no special "energy crops" are needed.

[edit] Renewable energy portal
What about a renewable energy portal ? --Mac 07:15, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- Great idea! (he says, realising he won't be able to contribute for several months...)
- There's nothing to stop someone starting a draft portal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Energy development/Portal:Renewable energy, if we want to test it out before making a proposal at Wikipedia:Portal/Proposals --Singkong2005 (t - c - WPID) 06:41, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

- Parhaps someone could take the absolutely horrid, just waiting-for-a-TfD-tag Template:Sustainability and energy development group, and use that to start work on a portal? linas 19:26, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

- That could be good. I've also noted that that template is getting huge - it might work well if it's split into smaller, more specific templates though. --Singkong2005 talk 05:34, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Category:Solar energy
Category:Solar design is supposed to be about building design, but was also being used for solar energy topics. I have split it, creating Category:Solar energy. Could someone who uses AutoWikiBrowser please help with moving relevant articles across? (I can't use AutoWikiBrowser as I only have access to a Linux machine just now.)
See also comments by Sunpower and myself on Category talk:Solar design. (Note Sunpower seems to be inactive.) --Singkong2005 tc 00:33, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- I've done most of the moving - please check Category:Solar design, Category:Solar energy & Category:Renewable energy, and my changes mentioned below, to see if I've missed anything or made errors. I've followed the principle that Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory... However there are occasions when this guideline can and should be ignored. (Wikipedia:Categorization#Some general guidelines)
- I put Solar cooker, Solar hot water, Solar heating, Active solar, Solar pool panels & Solar Decathlon into both the Solar design and the Solar energy categories. Solar cooker isn't about building, but it isn't exactly an energy topic either.
- I put Solar-powered pump in the solar energy cat... though conceivably it could fit in solar design as well, depending on context.
- Solar time moved to Category:Sun - not about design or energy.
- Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation - removed a lot of excessive cats. Left in Category:Renewable energy but added Category:Solar energy as well as it's one of the specific topics covered by this think tank. --Singkong2005 tc 01:24, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Alternative energy needs some work
Some of the articles in Category:Alternative energy seem out of place - e.g. a few seem to be more related to renewable energy, and thus probably shouldn't be in the parent cat (Category:Alternative energy) as well. --Singkong2005 tc 02:10, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Bicycle" undergoing Feature Article review
The bicycle article is currently having its featured status reviewed. The subject might be on the border of the scope of this project, but if anyone feels like lending a hand in preserving its FA status, please feel free :) --jwandersTalk 18:00, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Energy portal
As it relates in part to the subject matter of this WikiProject, note that an energy portal now exists. Gralo 02:50, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 00:28, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
