Wikipedia:WikiProject on user warning layout standardisation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The WikiProject on user warning layout standardization seeks to standardize the formatting of warning and block messages on user talk pages in order to make their use more straightforward and to facilitate the administrator intervention process. We are still in the discussion phases of the project. If you're interested, even if you're not quite sure how to help yet, feel free to join by adding your name below.

[edit] Current Guidelines
See below the example box for written guidelines.
== Warnings == === December 2005 === # warning # warning * block # warning === January 2006 === #warning #: comment about warning #:: comment # warning * block
- Warnings should be grouped by date under the heading "Warnings", with the template

below the main heading. - User warnings should be placed in numerical list form without line breaks.
- Block messages should be placed in bulleted list form without line breaks.
- Messages should be removed without archival after three months or less, depending on the number of warnings. In the case of registered vandals, archiving is up to them so long as recent warnings aren't removed.
- Optionally, the standardised edit summary is either
(maintenance)
or the more specific (edit as appropriate):maintenance (formatting/organisation/subst/add wnote/rm oldest warnings)
.
[edit] Special cases
[edit] AOL
Edits via AOL proxies may appear through any of a very large range of proxy servers, even when made by the same user, so that a message addressed to one user is often received by a different user. As a result, messages on talk pages may well fail to reach that user, and instead end up being read by another, unrelated user. The result of this problem is that legitimate users may check their talk page and be confused or aggravated by a large number of warnings that they had nothing to do with. This is the subject of many complaints emailed to the Foundation, and has a noticeably negative effect on the opinions of legitimate users operating from AOL.
To prevent this, warnings should be removed from AOL talk pages much more regularly than usual. How soon to do so is debated, varying from hours to days. Removal after a week is generally accepted.
[edit] Indefinitely blocked users
Talk pages of indefinitely blocked users should be cleared of all content except the block notice. This block notice should explain the block reason, or link to the block log which will do so.
