Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/NHL Entry draft format
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a page to give a general guideline for creating pages about the various NHL Entry Drafts (NHL Amateur Draft prior to 1979).
See: 2005 NHL Entry Draft for an example of a good article.
Contents |
[edit] Introduction
The first paragraph should include the year, date, and where it was held.
There should also be no table of contents. This can be achieved by including __NOTOC__.
[edit] Body
The first major section should include any interesting information or statistics about the draft.
[edit] Draft List
The second major section should be a listing of the people drafted. The team's article should be linked to only once and the player's name should be a link only if they've played in more than a few games in the NHL or they are notable some other way. Put another way, if a player isn't likely to have an article written about them, they don't need to be linked and considering that there are hundreds of active and notable players without articles (or with sub articles) it's not likely that we're going to be creating articles for a guy who played in only 57 NHL games any time soon. Use your discretion and common sense regarding this.
[edit] Header
The second section (draft listing) should include a table of contents like the following (not to state the obvious but only include the number of rounds that the draft actually had):
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Round 4 | Round 5 | Round 6 | Round 7 | Round 8 | Round 9 | Round 10 | Round 11 | Round 12
Which will look like this on the page:
Selections By Round |
[edit] List format
The listing should include a header for each round (ex. ===Round 3===). If the listing is incomplete include the template Hockey Draft info missing. The listing format is the following:
===Round 1=== {| border="1" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" class="wikitable" |- ! bgcolor="#DDDDFF" width="2.75%" | # ! bgcolor="#DDDDFF" width="22.0%" | Player ! bgcolor="#DDDDFF" width="16.5%" | Nationality ! bgcolor="#DDDDFF" width="24.0%" | NHL Team ! bgcolor="#DDDDFF" width="100.0%" | College/Junior/Club Team |- | 1 | Sidney Crosby (C) | CAN | Pittsburgh Penguins | Rimouski Océanic (QMJHL) |- | 2 | Bobby Ryan (RW) | USA | Mighty Ducks of Anaheim | Owen Sound Attack (OHL) |- | 3 | Jack Johnson (D) | USA | Carolina Hurricanes | U.S. National Team Development Program |- |}
This generates the following table:
[edit] Round 1
# | Player | Nationality | NHL Team | College/Junior/Club Team |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Sidney Crosby (C) | Canada | Pittsburgh Penguins | Rimouski Océanic (QMJHL) |
2 | Bobby Ryan (RW) | United States | Mighty Ducks of Anaheim | Owen Sound Attack (OHL) |
3 | Jack Johnson (D) | United States | Carolina Hurricanes | U.S. National Team Development Program |
The listed player nationalities should be accurate for the time the draft occurred. So David Volek (drafted 1984) and Radek Dvorak (drafted 1995), both from what is now the Czech Republic, have "Czechoslovakia" and "Czech Republic" respectively given as their nationalities.
[edit] NavBox
The last thing on the page should be a "nav box" that shows links to the preceding and succeeding drafts. Pleas use the template, Template:NHL Drafts. More information on templates can be found at Wikipedia:Template_messages. For example:

Which will look like this on the page:
Preceded by: 2003 NHL Entry Draft |
NHL Entry Draft | Succeeded by: 2005 NHL Entry Draft |
[edit] Category
Finally, the article should have the following category listings:
- A category for the year in ice hockey (ex. )
