Fernando Alonso qualifying at the 2005 US Grand Prix

Formula One is regarded as the highest class of single-seat open-wheel formula auto racing. It is based around a series of races, known as Grands Prix, held on purpose-built circuits or closed-off city streets, whose results determine two annual World Championships, one for drivers and one for constructors. Europe is Formula One's traditional centre and remains its leading market; however, Grands Prix have been held all over the world, and with new races in Bahrain, China and Turkey, its scope is continually expanding. As the world's most expensive sport, its economic impact is significant, and its financial and political battles are widely observed. The sport is regulated by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and is generally promoted and controlled by Bernie Ecclestone through a variety of corporate entities.

Damon Hill at French Gran-Prix in 1995

Damon Hill is a retired British racing driver and the 1996 Formula One World Champion. The son of the late, two time Formula One world champion Graham Hill, he is the only son of a world champion to win the title himself. Hill started his Formula One career with the Brabham team in 1992. He went on to take his first win at the 1993 Hungarian Grand Prix for the Williams team, the first of 22 victories, of which 21 were for Williams. In 1994 he won the British Grand Prix, a race his father had never won during his own career. In the mid 1990s, Hill was Michael Schumacher's main rival for the Formula One Driver's Championship, finishing runner-up in the German's 1994 and 1995 title seasons. The two had a series of controversial clashes on and off track, including the famous collision at Adelaide in 1994 that gave Schumacher his first title by a single point. Hill was dropped by Williams for 1997 despite taking eight victories and winning his world championship in 1996. He went on to record the Jordan team's first ever win at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, and came within a few miles of being the only driver to win a Grand Prix for the Arrows team and their Yamaha engine supplier at the 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix. [edit] Types of articles

[edit] Formula One and its series

Current Season Summary:

2006 Formula One season

Articles related to Formula One:

History of Formula One
Formula One regulations
Formula One cars
Formula One racing
Future of Formula One

Lists:
Drivers (Champions)
Constructors (Champions)
Pointscoring system
Grands Prix | Circuits
Records | Engines
Colors | Other People
Fatal Accidents

The sport's primary article is the "top" article of a series which includes five other related topics. The Wikipedians who created these articles intended to divide the topic of Formula One into specific subtopics, and chose the five topics they thought would best accomplish this goal. The appropriateness of the subtopics is open to discussion.

All six articles should include the template Formula One at the top.

  • Formula One is the main article for the sport, including general information; summaries of the articles on history, cars, and racing; general sections on drivers/constructors, grands prix, and circuits; a section noting the important people in F1's history; a 2004 season section; and a section on the Future of F1.
    • History of Formula One - the sport's history, in detail. This should include major regulation changes, major technical advances, and the most important drivers and constructors of each era.
    • Formula One cars - a detailed description of the modern F1 car. Information about historical F1 cars belongs in the History article.
    • Formula One racing - the schedule and procedure of an F1 grand prix weekend; information about racing strategy.
    • Formula One regulations - both current and historical information on the FIA's technical and sporting regulations.
    • Future of Formula One - a look at proposed changes to the sport and new regulations for future seasons.

[edit] Lists

There are nine Formula One-related lists. These should be historically complete, and include the template Formula One. Each, when updated, should also be marked "Accurate as of [date]" in order to assist future editors.

[edit] Race reports

A long-term goal of this project is to create articles containing a summary of every Formula One race since the sport's inception in 1950.

Thanks to a bot written by Bill Cook, articles containing full classifications of every past race now exist, but most need summaries and many need standardization.

The standard structure may be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Formula One/Example race report. The wikitext is annotated with comments and may be copied to assist with the creation of a new report.

[edit] Seasons

This article type is more or less under development. See 2005 Formula One season for a very nifty work-in-progress. Once the season is complete, we will establish standards.

[edit] Grands Prix

There should be a complete article on every race which has been a part of the Formula One calendar since the series started in 1950 (see List of Formula One Grands Prix). Each article should contain:

  • At the top, an infobox:

  • History. This should cover all F1 races held under that name, and should note changes in venue, and the reasons for the change. The history should also cover races from other series held under the same name, if applicable.
  • A reverse-chronological list of winners in table format, including year, driver, constructor, location, and links to the relevant race reports, formatted thus:
Year Driver Constructor Location Report
2005 Giancarlo Fisichella Renault Melbourne Report
2004 Michael Schumacher Ferrari Melbourne Report
Year
Driver
Constructor
Location
Report
2005
Giancarlo Fisichella
Renault
Melbourne
Report
2004
Michael Schumacher
Ferrari
Melbourne
Report
If a grand prix was only run once (e.g. Moroccan Grand Prix), there need not be a table of winners; instead, the race report article should redirect to the race's article, and the article should be structured like a race report.

[edit] Circuits

  • All F1 circuit articles (i.e. any circuit ever used for an F1 race) should include an infobox:

[edit] Drivers

Example of F1 driver from Michael Schumacher:

[edit] Constructors

  • All constructors' articles should have an infobox, F1 team, at the top:
{{F1 team |

[edit] Updating

Since Formula One is a constantly-changing subject, its pages need constant updating. The following guidelines should help when updating F1-related articles.

[edit] After a race

  • Add the name and team of the winner to the table in the article on the relevant race, e.g. Monaco Grand Prix.
    • Also update the race info box with the winner, pole and fastest lap.
  • Create a race report article containing the complete classification, e.g. 2005 Monaco Grand Prix.
  • Add the name and team of the winner to the relevant season article, e.g. 2005 Formula One season.
  • Update the relevant statistics on the articles of the winning driver and their team.
  • Update the statistics of all competing drivers in the infobox in their articles and on the list of Formula One drivers.
  • Add an outline page for the next race, containing dates, location, and F1 race report table.
