[edit] Scope

Dragon Ball is a Japanese metaseries. It began as a weekly serialized manga (42 tankoban volumes), then adapted to an anime (three series, three TV specials, 17 feature films), and spawned dozens of home and arcade video games, toys, clothing, and other merchandise. Dragon Ball has been translated into dozens of languages in many countries.

All information should be based on the original versions. Mainly, this will mean the Japanese versions (though at least one video game will refer to the English version). Because there are so many, no single English adaptation can be used as the English version. Besides the out-of-print adaptations, there are at least three English anime dubs and another company doing the manga, as well as another company translating the video games (which has been inconsistent at best). It would be inappropriate to pick any single distribution company over another.

The scope of the project will extend to include the manga, anime, video games merchandise. More specificly, the project will include:

  • The manga, television anime, feature films, video games, music
  • The Dragon Ball universe in general
  • Individual characters and other elements
  • Use of mythology, geology, and other inspirations within the series
  • Dragon Ball as a cultural phenomenon
  • English language adaptation of the metaseries

While not specifically part of the project (as such articles are not focused on Dragon Ball), the following topics should be looked into as well:

  • Cast, crew, distribution companies, production companies of Dragon Ball related items.

Our scope does not include:

  • Fanfiction and fan culture
  • Doujinshi
  • Any other form of speculation
  • Adaptations into any language other than Japanese and English
  • Works with only a passing reference to Dragon Ball

[edit] Article structure

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and Manga#Article_structure for inspiration.

For each page type, we have a "template" article. These articles should be the focus of structural improvements, which can then be imitated in other articles of the same type. Many articles are far too long and there is no over arching style. They also come under criticism for being "In-Universe". anything that can be written about from a real-world perspective should be written that way.

To repeat: All information should be based on the original versions.

  • Character lists - Characters with too little information (Bubbles, Lime) to warrant a full page should be in a single list page (as opposed to the several we have now). Instead of the dozen list pages we have now, we should consolodate every character into one list. The list page should separate characters by species, then alphabetically. The list should not be broken up based on manga-only characters, anime-only characters, movie-only characters, etc. Each entry should give a brief recap of their involvement in the series, character traits, explanation of their name pun, as well as a quick note as to which media they appear in.
see example
  • Character pages - Main characters (Goku, Gohan), and any other character with enough information (Oob, Oolong) should receive their own page. Each page should give a brief (three paragraphs maximum) recap of their involvement in the entire series, describe character traits, talk about the character's techniques, transformations, and the like, as well as a separate section detailing the charater's name pun (original pun word, kana changes, possible romanizations, etc)
see example
  • Chapter/Volume pages - I think articles recapping single chapters would be of great benefit to the project. But, that's a lot of pages; perhaps only Volume or even just arc summaries would be sufficient.
see example
  • Episode/Arc pages - At this point it's unclear whether each episode should have it's own page or if story arc pages would be sufficient. Many other anime articles have single episode pages
see example
  • Movies - Each feature film should have its own page. -
see example
  • Dragon Ball media - a separate page (preferably more than a list) detailing the release structure of the manga (Jump, tankoban, kanzenban), anime, movies, sup. books, video games, music compilations, etc. Page should be rather short, detailed information can be split off to separate pages.
see example
  • Music - I think a page listing and explaining the music (BGM, opening/closing themes,) would be big enough for it's own page.
see example
  • Video Game pages - each Dragon Ball video game should have its own page. Special attention should be given to the 'Budokai series'. We will have to keep the English game names, so it should be made clear in the opening paragraph the 'Budokai' 1, 2, and 3 are actually DragonBall Z games, and are not part of the same 'series' as the 'Budokai Tenkaichi' or Sparking! series. Special editions of games should be included as sections in the regular game's article.
see example
  • Supplemental Books - there should be a page detailing the daizenshuu, world guides, landmark, and other supplemental books.
see example
  • Template - the templates seen on the Dragon Ball pages now, while good, are too large and there should only be one, not two (or three). One bottom template needs to be consolidated for the whole metaseries.
see example
  • English adaptations - There should be a separate and distinct page detailing the different English adaptations of Dragon Ball. Including which company distributed where, when, differences from the Japanese version, censorship issues, etc.
see example
  • "Other" - Pages beyond these types of pages will probably be unique..

[edit] Hierarchy definition

See also Category:Dragon Ball.

Project categorization:

  • Category:WikiProject Dragon Ball

  • Category:WikiProject Dragon Ball categories

Should we get rid of the 'categories' category?

[edit] Goals

[edit] Ultimate goals

  • Create a well-organized corner of Wikipedia that is not ridiculed by the rest of the Internet
  • Gradually increase the quality of each section

[edit] Big projects

  • Create template pages for different article types
  • Delete orphaned or useless articles
  • Merge small articles

[edit] Tasks

For when you have a small amount of time...

  • Cite anything you can in any article! This is more important than adding info!
  • Italicize every instance of the Dragon Ball series name
  • Take out references to dub names (ie: " Mr. Satan (known as 'Hercule' in the English dub) ")
  • Look for and suggest better (matching!) lead images for the main characters
  • Vote!
  • Italicize (''term'') terms borrowed from the Japanese, as per Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Foreign_terms.

[edit] Articles that require attention

  • All of them, basically
  • Articles that have no purpose on Wikipedia (I've come across a few throught the category tree)
  • Rip-off articles and images. Many articles have taken images and information off of other web sites without properly citeing such. The Dragon Ball Timeline in particular needs a complete rewrite (which I'm doing).

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
