Wikipedia:WikiProject Defunct Airlines

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the Defunct Airlines WikiProject! This is a WikiProject dedicated to the expansion of articles on defunct airlines, and most importantly listing destinations served by those defunct airlines. There is a List of defunct airlines on Wikipedia and a Defunct airlines category, but that list is incomplete, and many articles already in place about defunct airlines do not have their former destinations.

My name is Jon, and in this project I am particularly interested in regional or rural airports served by defunct pre-deregulation or just after deregulation that no longer have air service. An example of this would be Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Glens Falls, New York, just outside Lake George. This airport was once served by several airlines including Brockway Air (an article I started myself), but now is left without any airline service.

Goals
  • Expand and create articles on defunct airlines, particularly regional airlines, which mostly have been crushed by the major airlines.
  • Find as many destinations served for defunct airlines as possible, paying special attention to destinations which no longer have airline service or are now under Essential Air Service protection.
  • Expand and create articles on airports which were served by this airlines that no longer have service, such as Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Glens Falls, New York.
  • Expand the List of defunct airlines article.
  • In the future, possibly have a list on all airport pages of airlines formerly served under the airlines currently served. This may be more difficult with the larger airports, but it is well in range with regional airports and airports no longer having airline service.
  • Expand not only upon articles about defunct airlines in the United States, but those of other countries as well, most notably Canada.
Scope
  • All defunct airlines, specifically defunct regional airlines. An incomplete List of defunct airlines is available.
  • All airports formerly served by these defunct airlines, especially those which no longer have airline service or have very limited EAS service.

Contents

[edit] Guidelines

  • All defunct airline articles should discuss a brief history of that airline, such as where it was headquartered, where it held a hub, and how it eventually folded or merged with another airline.
  • All articles should have a list of destinations formerly served, and an asterisk (*) should be placed next to all airports which no longer have scheduled airline service.
  • If available, we should gain pictures of past logos, timetable images, or fleet images of the airline to include in the articles.
  • If available, articles should also include former fleet information, though this may be difficult to find.

[edit] Open tasks

  • For this project to work, we need to find as much as possible about past airlines. Many of the sources may not even be on the internet. Please see the resources section for websites that may aid us in this task.
