Wake Island 2007 is a free add-on map that was added after the computer game Battlefield 2 was patched to version 1.03, this map is an updated version of the Wake Island map from the computer game Battlefield 1942. The map is set on a clear day with a long view distance. The terrain is a relatively thin piece of land in the shape of a hollow arrowhead.

[edit] Overview

The USMC side starts on an uncapturable Wasp-class assault ship to the north-west of the island. The PLA team has 5 capturable bases on the main island, of which one is an airbase. None of the Chinese flags are uncapturable, meaning their main flag, the Airfield should have a strong defense.

[edit] Map briefing

In a surprise move, forces of the People's Liberation Army have attacked and captured Wake Island in a bid to threaten US lines of supply. USMC forces have been short-stopped from their deployment in Manchuria to respond to this new threat. The airbase on Wake Island is the lynchpin of the Chinese air threat, however it is highly susceptible to ground attack from either the northern or the southern approaches of the island.

Map of the real Wake Island

The map is based on Wake Island in the North Pacific Ocean. It is a good representation of the real island; it is even split into three smaller islands, linked together by bridges. The airstrip is in a similar location as on the real island, but the real one stretches far into the part of the island with the Beach and South Base flags.

[edit] Flags

See also for description of vehicles: List of vehicles in Battlefield 2

[edit] Carrier

The aircraft carrier is located in the north west corner of the map and is the USMC's only control point to begin with. The radar is located on the ship itself, with the artillery on a small island near that main island.(note that this island does not exist in either real life or the original Battlefield 1942 game; it was added to provide a convenient location for the aforementioned artillery).

Two deck guns are available. Alt-fire launches guided SAMs

[edit] North Village

The North Village control point usually gets the most attention at the beginning of the game, as it is the nearest to the USMC base. The flag is surrounded by small buildings, but there is little cover around the flag itself. This area tends to be highly contested throughout the round, often falling repeatedly to both sides.

[edit] North Base

  • Vehicles: Two DPV/FAVs.

The North Base is located to the east of the North Village. It is a fairly difficult flag to attack if it is being defended properly. There is little to no cover around the flag, except for a small building, which gives the player little protection.

[edit] South Base

  • Vehicles: Two DPV/FAVs, one M1A2 SEP/Type 98.

There are several small buildings surrounding the South Base. These provide a little shelter when capturing the flag, but it is still quite an open flag.

[edit] Airfield

This is the PLA's primary flag, and it is important for the Chinese side to keep control of it. Generally this is the best defended flag, but this can be used to both sides advantage. When attacking this flag, most players will be in the same general area, so a few people can go and capture any undefended flags elsewhere on the map. The capture of this flag by the USMC is often a sign of things to come, without adequate air support the Chinese are seldom able to capture flags elsewhere and often find themselves pinned down.

[edit] Beach

The Beach is a fairly overlooked flag. It is out in the open, making it both hard to attack and defend. However, it can be quite a useful flag for the USMC, as it is quite close to the Airfield. However, no vehicles spawn on this flag. The flag is heavily contested and is used by both sides as a foothold to launch attacks onto the next nearest enemy locations, the control of this area is vital as it dominates the road leading to the airbase and the hill above the beach is heavily fortified.

[edit] Trivia

  • This map was released with the 1.03 patch in October 2005.
  • This is essentially a remake of the original Wake Island map from Battlefield 1942 sharing the same general layout and even airfield configuration (see note above), with the WWII-style buildings from the original map and other signs of the invasion (such as A6M Zero wreckage) still present, but in a modern context of a Sino-American war.
  • The map only has a 64 player version, making it unsuitable for games with few people. The official version is a multi-player only map, although a fix is available that will enable it for single-player.
