The first Presidential election of the Commonwealth of the Philippines was held on September 16, 1935 in the Philippines. This was the first election since the enactment of the Tydings-McDuffie Act that paved the way for a transitory government. Senate President Manuel Luis Quezon won against revolutionary President Emilio Aguinaldo. His election victory came after Aguinaldo was accused of taking bribe from the Spaniards when he took exile to Hong Kong. Another contender was Gregorio Aglipay, founder and supreme bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Indepediente (Philippine Independent Church).
