A Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) is a doctorate (post-masters)-level degree awarded in the Netherlands. Prior to the introduction of the bachelor/master system in the European Higher-Education Area, the degree was called Master of Technological Design (MTD). Following this, the title was thought to no longer sufficiently convey the difference between masters-level programmes and the post-masters education and training programmes in the Netherlands. As such, the relevant universities in the Netherlands decided that as of 2004, all graduates from one of their post-masters design-oriented education and training programmes are awarded a PDEng instead of a MTD.
Consequently, also all MTD-laureates that received their MTD-degree from the Stan Ackermans Institute before 2004 are entitled to use the PDEng title behind their names, replacing the MTD-degree
