Wideopen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wideopen is a village in North Tyneside, north of Gosforth and five miles from Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. The spelling as one word is the currently approved form, but Wide Open is still found on maps and other sources, including the signs at either end of the village. There is an inconsistency in contemporary addresses of shops and services.
It borders on the villages of Seaton Burn, Brunswick Village and Hazlerigg. It is bordered on the west side by the A1 bypass, and on the east by the pit heap from the former mine.
The village contains a pub (Traveller's Rest), a church, a playing field and a parade of small shops.
It has two primary schools, Hazlewood Primary School and Greenfields Primary School, students in these schools will the follow on to Seaton Burn High School.
It also has a youth football team playing with teams in various age groups, the teams play at lockey park.
[edit] Wideopen Colliery
Wideopen Colliery was sunk and opened by Perkins and Thackrah in 1825. It produced its first coal in May 1827.
[edit] Other places
There are other places named Wideopen:
- East Wideopen and West Wideopen, islands on the inner Farne Islands
- Wideopen, a hamlet (or just a farm) near Kelso in the Scottish Borders
- Wideopen Plantation, a wood near Norham in Northumberland.
There is no evidence, however, that any one of these places is named after another one of them [1].
