WHLD is an AM radio station licensed to Niagara Falls, New York. The station resides at 1270 kHz on the dial and is owned by Citadel Communications, although it is currently under a license management agreement (LMA) with Niagara Independent Media, a progressive media activist group.
[edit] History and programming
WHLD signed on in 1941 under the ownership of Earl C. Hull, who named the station after his wife Hilda L. Duell.
Prior to February 2006, WHLD was a time-brokered radio station, with urban oldies during program gaps. The station was billed as "The Station of the Nations." The Buffalo Coalition for Progressive Media, the predecessor to Niagara Independent Media, had been leasing much of the space during mornings for programs from Pacifica Radio and a handful of local programming.
On February 13, 2006, Niagara took over the station via the LMA and brought with it a new branding and slogan, "News Talk 1270: The Voice of Reason." Niagara added programming from Air America Radio, most notably Al Franken and Randi Rhodes live in their entirety.
