"White Summer" is a song by English rock guitarist Jimmy Page, who first recorded the song as a member of the Yardbirds. Page played the song live at solo performances and during Led Zeppelin concerts. The recording on the Led Zeppelin Box Set is from the Playhouse Theatre on June 27, 1969 as part of the BBC's In Concert program. As with most of the live versions of this song, Page dove-tailed the end it straight into the song "Black Mountain Side", which was a track from Led Zeppelin's first album.
This recording remained shelved for many years, but was eventually included on the 1990 box set under the title "White Summer/Black Mountain Side'. Subsequent CD releases of the band's 1982 album Coda also feature this track.
Jimmy Page often performed "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" as part of the standard Led Zeppelin set list during 1968-1970 and again on the 1977 and 1980 tours. He used his Danelectro guitar to play this song, as shown on the Led Zeppelin DVD. On April 4, 1970 Page performed the song on the Julie Felix Show.
Middle Eastern, Egyptian and Indian styles are incorporated in the song, which was a partial cover of the traditional folk song "She Moved Through The Fair" (recorded by Davy Graham in 1963). Page originally played this song with The Yardbirds
