White Horse Pagoda
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The White Horse Pagoda (Chinese 白马塔, pinyin bai ma ta) was possibly the first pagoda built in China proper, and certainly the first Chinese pagoda in the sense that it was built by official decree. Built in 67, it was constructed of wood as part of the White Horse Temple in Luoyang.
Though the temple still exists today, the original pagoda has not survived. However, it is known that the pagoda was placed in the center of the temple compound, since two Japanese temples built to mimic White Horse Temple have survived with this layout.
