[edit] History
White Gold Tower was built by the ancient Ayleids and served as capital for their kingdom, before the Alessian Revolution. Once a center of learning and nobility, it was sacked by the freed Human slaves, serving as palace for the kingdoms to come.
Reman Cyrodiil, after defeating the Akaviri invaders at Pale Pass, went on to became the first Emperor of the Second Empire and used White Gold Tower as his palace. It has served the Emperors of Tamriel as Imperial Palace ever since. Nowadays, the Tower remains the center of the Imperial City. It is also the place where the Elder Scrolls are kept, and also is where the Moth Priests conduct their reading rituals of the scrolls.
After the death of Emperor Uriel Septim VII, High Chancellor Ocato takes over the Imperial Palace, reigning provisionally as head of the Elder Council.
[edit] Architecture
The Tower, built in the ancient Ayleid architecture, can be seen from every part of the Imperial City, dominating the city, as well as influencing it architecturally. The tower consists of a large central spire that grows out of a rotund central building, the Imperial Palace. The main chamber inside the palace, directly below the spire, is used for Elder Council meetings. The Imperial Palace Guards has barracks in the palace. The Imperial Battlemage's quarters are located in the basement, whereas the location of the Emperor's quarters has not been disclosed, presumably for security reasons.
"White Gold Tower" could refer to the whole structure as well as just the spire. The same applies to "Imperial Palace", whereas the palace designated the central assembly chambers and the Emperor's quarters.
