White Fence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
White Fence is a street gang that was founded in 1929 in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, California. It may be the oldest gang in Los Angeles. Using the graffiti "WF", White fence claims territory along Avenida Cesar Chavez (formerly Brooklyn Avenue) from Soto Street to 1st Street in East Los Angeles.
White Fence got its name from the fence under the 1930s-era 4th Street Bridge. The fence was painted white by the city of Los Angeles, and became emblematic of the barrio inhabited by local Pachucos. Rooted in the Mexican American culture of East Los Angeles, the gang has, since its inception, consisted of predominantly Hispanic members. Membership, however, is open to a few races and ethnicities, provided that individuals can be trusted to adequately represent the gang.
The gang is divided into neighborhood subgroups called "cliques". One of the largest cliques, "The Hole" (LS), with roots in Hollywood, still has ties with eastside White Fence. The major clique is called "Monstros". Cliques on the westside include Tinys TS, and on the eastside include the Spiders, Locos LS.
White Fence was also featured in the 1988 movie Colors.
Members wear apparel with logos from Wake Forest University due to logo's use of the initials "WF". However, White Fence has no affiliation with the University.
