Whirr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
whirr was an all-improv live electronic band in San Francisco between 2002 and 2005. Members included Reid Spice, Peter d'Elia, Charles Sheldon, Howard Connell, Brian Schwartz, Tom Gears, Max McCormick and Jay Dietrich.
The group began experimenting in 2003 with having members of the band take turns conducting the improvisations using hand signals to cue changes in dynamics, tempo, key and chord changes. This format changed as the band evolved, later taking the form of members wearing headphones while the conductor gave signals through a "closed circuit" microphone.
whirr released a studio album in 2004 and a live multitrack recording in early 2005. They played with a variety of local Bay Area bands including the Ron Jeremy Explosion, the Joe Lazar Quartet and Blvd. at various venues such as the Elbo Room, Last Day Saloon and the Madrone Lounge. The group disbanded in mid-2005 when Peter d'Elia moved to Germany.
