When the Pawn is the second album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, released by Epic Records in the United States on November 9, 1999 (see 1999 in music). Its full title is:

When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King
What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight
And He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring
There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might
So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand
And Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights
And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land
And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right

The album came in special packaging that contained sheer red paper around the inserts. The title was written as a poem over Apple's face on the cover. She wrote the poem after reading a bad review of her debut album Tidal. The album's long title has become a source of trivia today, and currently holds the world record for longest album title.[1]

The first single, "Fast as You Can", was fairly popular and received moderate radio and video airplay. It charted within the top twenty on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and became Apple's first top forty hit on the UK Singles Chart. The follow-up singles, "Limp" and especially "Paper Bag", were less successful. The video for "Paper Bag" featured Apple lamenting something in a bus station while children dressed as gangsters and molls dance around her.
