Wheatsheaf junction

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wheatsheaf Junction was the Junction on the railway line between Wrexham and Gresford on the Shrewsbury and Chester Railway. The location was around 2 km from Wrexham General Station It was built as contigious with the line to Brymbo which was the terminus. The route to Brymbo was almost dead straight, but was very steep and consequently had two rope worked inclined planes locally called 'brakes' and also a tunnel. The route was subsequently superseded in 1862 by a new line and yard that could be worked throughout by steam engines, this was from Croes Newydd, named the Wrexham and Minera Branch as it also allowed access to the quarries and mines in Minera. Progressively parts of the original line fell into disuse until after the Great War when only a yard for 269 wagons and a branch to Gwersyllt colliery adjoining the Wrexham Mold and Connahs Quay Railway was left.
