WHDR, 93 Rock, is a radio station in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area that broadcasts at 93.1 MHz.

[edit] History

WHDR was originally Classical WTMI, which ran from 1971 to 2001. On New Year's Eve 2001, it flipped to a "Pure Dance" format and became WPYM, "Party 93.1, South Florida's Pure Dance Channel." During its three year run, the station was popular with the area's dance music fans. The success also earned it a "Innovators Award" from Billboard magazine in 2002 and a "Best Dance Radio Station Award" at the 2004 Dancestar USA honors.

They also took on WHYI and WPOW-FM in attack promos over commercial spot loads and critizing their idea of "Party Music". At one point WPYM and WPOW went to court over the spotload attacks, which would later be settled out of court.

But its demise came in March 2005 when the station's would come to a end as WPYM took advantage of the sudden departure of WZTA's sudden flip from Rock to Hispanic Rhythmic by picking up the Rock format. This earned Cox Communications the ire of many listeners, who vowed to boycott its products and services thereafter.

Today WHDR is currently marketed as the only pure rock station in the area. It is touted for playing only 8 minutes of commercials per hour. The playlist ranges from 70's rock to newly released.

J & Dave in the morning are on-air from 5:30am - 10:00am EST and are promoted as "The freshest radio show" in South Florida.
