[edit] History
WHBF is The Quad Cities' second oldest television station, behind WOC-TV. The station signed on the air on July 1, 1950 as an affiliate of CBS, ABC and DuMont networks. WHBF would also share the latter two with WOC during its early years until DuMont's demise in 1955 and until WQAD signed on as a ABC affiliate in 1963. Since then they have done successfully well as a CBS affiliate in terms of newscasts and syndicated programming, due to its commitment to the Quad Cities area. Nonetheless, WHBF consistently remains #3 in local news broadcasting behind KWQC (NBC) and WQAD (ABC) and ahead of KLJB (FOX).
It also should be noted that WHBF and its sister stations in Lincoln, NE (KLKN), and Sioux City, IA (KCAU) seem to share the same branding (graphics, logo, music, and similar sets). However, WHBF's other sister station, WOI TV in Des Moines, IA, as of September 11th, 2006, changed it's branding. It has not been confirmed yet, if or when WHBF will switch to WOI's branding.
WHBF's call letters were a holdover from its former AM and FM sister stations, which are now part of Mercury Communications (which owns the AM) and Educational Media Foundation (which just acquired the FM), respectively. The TV and radio stations were sold separately in the mid 1980s.
