[edit] Summary
Hopper goes looking for Miguel Dominguez.
[edit] Synopsis
After recovering the "murder book" from Chad's car, Hopper contacts Andrea, asking her to bring him the file associated with the individual matching the fingerprint on the hourglass (one Miguel Dominguez, a member of the Latin Disciples). The two meet, but the file appears to be curiously sparse, considering the nature and number of crimes associated with the man pictured inside. Further compounding the issue is that Miguel Dominguez was allegedly in prison at the time of the murder, with no explanation for how his prints might have found themselves onto the hourglass. Seeking to find out more about both the man and the dead woman from the photograph, Hopper tracks Damien down at a family function. Damien is initially furious for the intrusion, but eventually agrees to help Hopper.
Reviewing the information, Damien observes that the man pictured in the file doesn't actually appear to be Miguel Dominguez at all, but is rather a legendary thug and killer. Damien explains that he is essentially a latino "boogey man", used to frighten small children, and in fact he wants nothing to do with the case. However, he agrees to help Hopper try and uncover the identity of the dead woman. Visiting a local church, Damien introduces Hopper to a nun who keeps a vast collection of photographs of missing immigrants. Damien and Hopper comb through the photographs for a number of hours, before the nun finally assists in locating the matching photograph. The photograph shows the woman (alive) and her mother, and has a name and address written on the back (Isabella).
That night, Chad is seen visiting an ATM. After stepping away from the machine and finishing up a cell phone call, he is approached by someone who opens fire without warning, shooting him multiple times. The second time this happens, we are shown a brief glimpse of who the shooter is -- it's Hopper's sister Jennifer, who until this point in the series has not been known as a potential threat to anyone. At the same time, across town, Damien's van is ambushed by skinheads who toss a grenade into the vehicle, killing everyone inside.
The next day, Hopper repeats the earlier scene with Damien, but this time at the church, quickly plucks out the needed matching photograph. The two pay a visit to the address shown on the back of the photograph and meet the mother of the victim. Although she initially seems coherent, it is revealed that she is in a state of denial about the death of her daughter, convinced that she is still alive. Unable to get anything from the mother, the two search the victim's carefully preserved room and uncover some expensive earrings, suggesting that she may have had a "sugar daddy". Upon asking her mother about it, the mother provides a man's name (Detweiler) who helped the daughter get a job at an exculsive club.
On the following morning, after trying several incorrect addresses associated with the man's name, Hopper visits the correct address for Mr. Detweiler. When the man opens the door, his identity is revealed to be none other than the Shadow Man himself. Hopper punches him and threatens him, trying to get answers from the man he thinks is the source of his nightmarish situation, but is disrupted by the man's wife appearing with a gun. Over the next several repeated days, Hopper returns to the address several times with different approaches, but can never get the answers he's looking for. The man is unwilling to reveal much information, even when threatened with death, claiming that he himself must protect his family from his own employers (and that he is not, in fact, the true mastermind).
Finally, in disgust, Hopper shows up the next morning and simply hands the man a bag containing the murder book, the hourglass, and the photograph. The man feigns ignorance, but Hopper says he doesn't care, that he merely wants it all to stop. The man notes that "things are not that simple", but Hopper leaves, repeating his plea to simply make the events of the day stop. Unbeknownst to the man, Hopper has planted a transmitter in the bag, and stakes out the home for the remainder of the day.
That night, a dark car pulls up and picks up the man. Hopper trails the car, listening to the conversation between the Shadow Man and his employer (who is also cloaked in shadow). After hearing that Hopper simply handed over all of the items of interest, the employer is concerned that there must be a leak, and that too much information has gotten out. He orders them to "burn it all down", i.e. to have everyone killed, including Chad, Damien, and Hopper. He also orders them to "find the girl". Upon learning of this (and based on his knowledge from the previous days), Hopper places several frantic calls, warning Damien about the skinheads, and alerting Andrea of the need to protect Chad at the ATM. Hopper goes home to find that Rita is OK, to his great relief.
At the quarry, the Shadow Man is dropped off, and asks to see "the girl" (who has apparently now been found). However, he himself is unexpectedly shot in both knees and then buried alive under a pile of sand from a dumptruck as a penalty for Hopper finding him. The employer is shown to have been watching the entire scene from his car. In the car, along with him, is Hopper's trembling sister; the man makes a thinly-veiled threat, stressing to her that people must learn from examples.
